About ‘Outside the Box’
‘Outside the Box’ builds a map of design in North America.
Shipped across the country in Bankers boxes, this annual traveling exhibition presents a dozen distinct national and international showcases each year. Working with local correspondents, each box houses a collection of thoughtfully designed objects, reflecting the particular resources and makers of that area.
A project by the Toronto Design Offsite Festival (TO DO) and WantedDesign, ‘Outside the Box’ has featured the work of more than 100 design studios and makers from across Canada and the U.S. The project debuted in Toronto in 2015. The seventh edition of the project takes place in January 2018 at the Toronto Design Offsite Festival, followed by WantedDesign Brooklyn in May 2018.
Toronto Design Offsite Festival
The Toronto Design Offsite Festival (TO DO) is Canada’s largest cultural celebration of design with over 100 exhibitions and events forming Toronto’s design week, January 15-21, 2018.
Going into its 8th year, TO DO transforms Toronto into a hub for creativity, taking design and art out of the studio and into the urban sphere, bringing people together to celebrate contemporary culture. We provide opportunities for emerging talent, and engage the community with exceptional and accessible public programming.
In January 2017, TO DO had direct participation from 700+ artists and designers, saw 130k + visitors, received 109+ million press impressions, and 500+ million total brand impressions.
WantedDesign is a platform dedicated to promoting design and fostering the international creative community at large throughout the year. It’s two marquee events take place during May’s NYCxDESIGN in both Manhattan and Brooklyn.
Founded in New York City in 2011 by Odile Hainaut and Claire Pijoulat, WantedDesign has established itself as a constant and staunch supporter of U.S. and international design via events, conversations, and partnerships and its yearly programming aims to nurture New York City’s design dialogue. WantedDesign’s original event location, the landmark Terminal Stores building on 11th Avenue in West Chelsea’s Historic District, has become a creative destination for the international design community in May, offering participants and visitors a unique and dynamic experience. The event also serves as a popular and inspiring meeting point for designers, manufacturers, buyers, distributors, craftspeople, students, design institutions, the press and all design lovers.
